If you’ve got minimal room available in your yard, then you know how important it is to make the most of the outdoor space that you have. It could be easy to think that keeping it fairly open and loosely designed would help it to feel bigger, but in actual fact, the opposite is true.
If you want to make a small yard feel like a bigger yard, the key is to have well defined spaces within it. Consider what you what and need in your backyard. An area for dining? Relaxing? A play area for the kids? Figure out the sections you’d like to have and plan accordingly. Then use materials like patio stones and plants to delineate these areas.
Use smaller outdoor furniture
Outdoor furniture is available in a wide range of styles and sizes. For a smaller yard, stick to smaller pieces that won’t overwhelm the space. Ideally you should choose items with see through patterns as these allow the eye to travel further giving the illusion of more space.
Don’t forget the side yard!
Most people overlook their side yard when planning their outdoor space. It usually just becomes a neglected area to keep your garbage cans or perhaps for some storage. But why not keep your garbage cans in the garage, those storage items in the shed, and do something really great with your side yard?
For example, you could set up a small outdoor bistro set and plant some rose bushes. Voila! You have the perfect little summer breakfast area!
Not enough room for that? How about planting a culinary herb garden?
Make your small yard a place you can’t wait to get to after work!
When you’re at work during the summer, are you excited to get home and sit out on the patio with a good book or a nice glass of wine? If the answer is no, what would it take to make it that way?
Why not turn your outdoor space into your own summer oasis? Consider creating a nicely arranged space with a quality patio set. Consider adding a grill or even a fire pit or heat lamp so that you can enjoy your space all year long.
Make some shade
Is the intense summer sun part of the reason why you are not enjoying your small yard as much as you’d like? Consider adding some shade with a cantilever umbrella, an awning or perhaps a pergola.
Level up
Another way to make a small yard feel like it’s bigger is to incorporate levels into the design. Consider elevating the area that is designated for dining or sinking the conversation area. Having different height levels is also a way to add more for bench seating or vertical gardening.
And speaking of vertical gardening – that’s another great way to make the most of your space in a small yard. If you love plants but don’t have much room, try using hanging baskets or wall mounted flower pots.
Remember, just because you have a smaller yard, it doesn’t mean you can’t also have an amazing yard. It just takes some thought and planning.
