Canadians might think that the end of summer means the end of outdoor living, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Patios, decks, balconies, and porches can continue to be great places for outdoor living, including entertaining, well into autumn.
Here are some tips for extending your seasons of outdoor living.
Tips
- position and wind breaks — Look for ways to position your patio furniture to soak up the sun and to reduce exposure to cooling winds. Are there potted plants that could create a wind break?
- barbecue — Step up with even more barbecuing. Grilled root vegetables? roast turkey? a full Thanksgiving meal? All are possible with a BBQ and a plan.
- warm drinks — Mulled apple cider, hot chocolate, mulled wine, warm chai tea, and Swedish glogg are all options.
- cozy up — With a selection of blankets to cozy up in, shawls, scarves, gloves, and washable hats you can keep yourself, your family, and your guests warm.
- fire pits, fire pots, chimeneas, and outdoor heaters – Take a cue from many restaurants that extend the patio season with outdoor heating. Read up on these heating options, find the one that suits you and any local restrictions, and warm up safely.
