Adding Tranquility to Your Backyard with a Water Feature
Your home means everything to you and you have spent a whole lot of time and effort making every detail exactly how you want it, but there seems to be something missing. Perhaps if you live close to a busy street or there’s a train that runs behind your house you want to add some peace and tranquility to your yard.
Water features add aesthetic value but they can also add some peace and quiet to your backyard, so adding one to your space can definitely help you to enjoy your backyard space even more than you already do. Here are some neat ways to incorporate a water feature into your backyard.
Ponds
This is probably the most common water feature thought of when people suggest to add a something to your backyard. What is really great about these is that they can, if large enough, act as their own regulating ecosystem which ensures they are pretty much self sufficient.
A pond can be large with multiple kinds of fish and perhaps rocks, a waterfall and a filtration system or it can be small with only one or two fish, or maybe somewhere in the middle. If you are going for the larger variety check with your local policies as some cities have bylaws as to how deep the ponds can be before they have to meet some barrier requirements.
Fountains
This kind of water feature is actually one of the simplest water features you can add to your backyard. You can purchase these prefabricated and in almost any style or colour you would like. Most fountains are recirculating in that they recycle the water in them via an internal pump. Fountains are often the most economically friendly water features to add to your backyard as no digging is involved and since they’re often already made they can be purchased, plugged in and running all within a Saturday afternoon.
Waterfall Walls
If you have a large area and can build a wall out of stone or brick you can have a waterfall wall. This would be great set behind big cozy furniture or in an area set up for reading in your backyard. This piece is a large installation, and probably won’t be a DIY project. You will need to hire a landscape professional or contractor to complete this project for you.
This kind of water piece is incredibly peaceful as it’s a larger version of a fountain but it’s definitely a permanent fixture so it’s really important to first weigh out the options and make sure that this is the right thing for you and your space. If you aren’t planning to stay in your home for a long time then this might not be a great investment.
No matter what kind of water fixture you decide to add to your backyard it will surely add tranquility and peace to the time you spend there. Having a waterfall or a pond with a fountain can act as a focal point for your space or it can accent an already beautiful space. Some pieces come already made and ready to place in your yard while others require more thought, planning and effort.
It’s a great way to explore your creativity and make a piece that is completely yours that you can enjoy and look at every day. Take some time and think about what kind of enjoyment you want to get out this water piece and then start looking for pieces that suit the space, effort and maintenance you are comfortable with dedicating to this.
