Patio and winter: two words that normally wouldn’t go together, but the winter is actually the perfect time to focus on designing, or redesigning, your patio space. During the summer months, your patio space is used quite a bit with parties, dinners and entertaining so there isn’t much time to think about the design or make any updates to it. Your patio is an outdoor extension of your home, so it’s important to make it the space you want it to be. Here’s why this winter is perfect for redesigning your outdoor space.
Take A Step Back
When you’re using your patio every day in the warmer months you might not really know what your space needs. In the winter, you can take a step back away from the space and put some thought into how you might want to use the space differently. Look at all the ways you and your family use your patio: do you wish you had more space for dining, or more space for enjoying a drink and conversation with friends? No matter what you want to use your space for, you can take this time to decide what it is you want to do with the space you have.
Take Inventory
If you’ve had your outdoor space for a number of years, you’ve probably accumulated a whole bunch of stuff that maybe you aren’t even sure where it came from. Over the winter you can take note of all the furniture and outdoor accessories you have; you can also take a look over everything to see what kind of shape it’s in and whether it needs replacing. Redesigning your patio doesn’t mean you’ll have to buy all new furniture, and perhaps you’ll be able to use some pieces you already have.
Take a Breath
Since you won’t be using your outdoor space for at least a few months you don’t have to make any big decisions right now. Perhaps you’re trying to decide between a couple different set ups, designs or pieces of furniture, so you can take this time to think it over. There are several computer programs – some even online – that will allow you to do some design and virtually set up your space so you can kind of see what your new patio will look like.
One of the best parts of designing your patio space during a season you aren’t actually going to use it is the deals you’ll find on furniture, accessories and textiles you might want or need for the summer. Most of the time you’ll find the end of season or out of season sales and perhaps you can purchase pieces that would normally be outside of your price range. You might have a harder time finding the exact colours or patterns you’re looking for but since summer isn’t coming for a while you can take the time to shop around and find what you’re looking for.
